Hey Guys! Pronunciation is Fun!

Learning a new language can be a fun and stressful journey, but along the way we will find different elements that together, will help us to have an effective communication. However, many times we forget that these elements work because each one has a function and none is more important than another; therefore, when we do not spend time on pronunciation, we usually have problems communicating our ideas and serial misunderstandings.

For that reason, It is important to remember that what we are looking for, is an intelligent pronunciation, not the false idea of sounding like a native; therefore, it is essential that we learn to discover what mistakes we are making and have an open mind about them.

Error Analysis

An error and a mistake are not the same, while a mistake is something we sometimes get wrong, on the other hand, an error is something we fail at because we do not know it. The role played by the analysis of these errors is fundamental, since it consists of highlighting these errors to be able to work on them with different techniques depending on the type of students.

Learning Process

Although it may sound false to many people, when we are learning a language and we make errors, those are not considered as something wrong; in fact, it is seen in such a way that learning is happening and not the opposite. Because when we are learning it is normal not to know something, that is the reason for learning to discover new things, even if we fail it is an opportunity to learn.

Pronunciation Errors and some Help

Errors in pronunciation, refers to the incorrect pronunciation of words that can greatly affect the message that we want to communicate. For example, in languages like Spanish the ‘H’ is silent, but in English it is not always the case, so speakers usually make that negative transfer in pronunciation. However, although it may seem very difficult, teachers have multiple ways to help us correct these mistakes through techniques such as:

1. Making Notes: Make a list of the most common errors to correct in an upcoming class.

2. Hinting/Prompting: Give clues to fix the error.

3. Reformulation: First you emphasize the error, then you give the right answer and finally you emphasize the right way to say it.
